Sweetness the Patisserie - SWEET Mallows

SWEETNESS The Patisserie on Urbanspoon

38 Oxford Street, Epping 2121, Sydney

Sweetness the Patisserie is a quaint little patisserie in Epping, the Northern part of Sydney. This part of Sydney is in need of good patisseries such as these. Their signature indulgence is Sweet Mallows - fresh & luscious handmade marshmallows. Its available in lots of different flavours, not like the pink & white marsmallows you find at the supermarkets.

I have a sweet tooth and love my marshmallows. These are great as they are gluten, nut, egg, dairy free and available in various sizes: small 2 marshmallow packs ($2.50 per pack), 165 gram bags $8, 385gram bags $16 (all comes in a cute little carry bag! - except for the 2 pack).

This visit, I got a big bag of mixed sweet mini mallow flavours $8 as I haven't really worked out which flavour is my favourite yet. Will be back to try their gorgeous looking cakes and desserts!

Pros: Makes for great gifts, to have over tea & coffee with the girls, or just because you feel like a sweet treat! They have cute little mini sizes of marshmallows which I find adorable as a gift for your sweet tooth BFF, or for the foodie - perhaps get them in regular size.

Cons: Some flavours can be a little sour, as I'm assuming the flavours are sourced from real fruits so can vary depending on whether these fruits are in season. Such as I found the Passionfruit marshmallow to be sour this time. My recommendation is to stick with flavours you know are generally sweet!! Strawberry :)

Mixed Bag of Sweet Mini Mallows $8 - super cute & yum!

Available in heaps of flavours (Strawberry, Raspberry, Jaffa, Blueberry, Maple & Lime, Chocolate, Toasted Coconut, Black Currant & Vanilla Swirl, Mocha, Creamy Orange, Rose Water, Passionfruit, Guava, Lime, Espresso, Sour Cherry, Lime & Cocont Swirl, Lemon, Mango, Brown Sugar & Cinnamon, Lavender, Strawberries & Creme, Vanilla Bean, Lychee Rose, Raspberry & Passionfruit Swirl, Aniseed).

Valentine's Day - Marketing Hype or Something Special?

It is getting to be that day of the year again. Most couples love it and singles hate it. The pink and red. The chocolates. The flowers. The restaurants.

The multitude of advertisements and posters appealing you to buy an item for your beloved. If you are in a relationship and you do not celebrate it, then you are just not romantic enough. If you are single, you basically try and overlook the sappiness of the entire situation and pretend that this is really just a day like any other while you battle your way through hordes of bouquet wielding couples and stay home for dinner because you do not want to be dining out with forty other couples in one place.

We have heard it all before. Valentine’s Day is just marketing hype, a way for Hallmark, chocolate makers, florists and restaurateurs to cash in. We have heard it from the couple that claims to not celebrate it because everyday should be Valentine’s Day. We heard it from single friends and even ourselves about how annoying the mills of couples are with their flowers tightly grasped in hand like a shield, declaring - “I’m in a RELATIONSHIP! I’m LOVED!”

Now there has to be some sense to it all for the practice to have come along so far and evolve to such prominence that it has become that second largest cardsending holiday of the year, after Christmas. There must be some sense to it all for perfectly discerning individuals to spend a tiny fortune to make this one day a special, momentous occasion for their sweetheart. A perfectly reasonable explanation as to why so many choose for this one specific day over three hundred and sixty four others to declare their undying love and affection to their beau.

In a time where technology pervades almost every aspect of our lives, where emails, Facebook, text messaging and other forms of electronic, second-hand experiences and communication are the norm, perhaps it is not such a surprise that there are more than a few individuals who would like to hang on to the ageold tradition of a handwritten card carrying words of affection and a planned night out together.

Perhaps it is the simple act of scheduling time together, planning something special and making the effort to ensure that your significant other has a good time on a day where everyone else seems to be making that extra effort to do the same.

However, Valentine’s Day does not have to be a day set aside for just couples. Many times, it can also be a celebration of friendship or even admiration for someone. Take the traditional colors of Valentine’s Day for example, pink is a sign of admiration while red expresses beauty and love although red roses are traditionally exchanged by couples or individuals who wish to express their feelings to one another.

While it can be easy to relegate the day to just couples and dismiss it altogether when you’re single, it would in reality, be a lot more wonderful if people started viewing Valentine’s Day as a day to celebrate all kinds of relationship and not just the romantic sort. While it might not be quite so masculine for guys to gift one another a box of chocolates, a written note or card of appreciation for all the times they were each other’s “wingman” would be nice. Everyone likes to be appreciated, and isn’t that what Valentine’s Day is about?

A day to show your love and appreciation to the ones you care most? On that note, how about showing some appreciation to yourself? Love yourself first, and you would be surprised at how that translates into loving and appreciating the people around you better. Make it a day of appreciation and spend it well with friends and even yourself.

Instead of spending every holiday feeling stressed and loaded with plans to please others, take some time out for yourself before you embark on making the day a special one for the people you love. Whether it’s Thanksgiving, Christmas, the New Year or any other holiday, once you have gotten into the habit of appreciating yourself first, it sets you in a great position to appreciate others.

So remember, however way you wish to spend the coming February 14, or any other holiday throughout the year, be your own best Valentine!

Valentine's Day - Share the Love

Did you know?

Valentine's Day is actually known as Saint Valentine's Day, a holiday observed on February 14 honoring one or more early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine; Valentine of Rome & Valentine of Terni. It was first established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD and first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. (Wikipedia).

I think Valentine's day has come along way from its original beginnings... what other day can invoke such emotions in people - a day that makes singles around the world gasp and want to disappear, and a day when couples have no shame in displaying their affections and how in love they are.

Dateless on Valentine's Day? There's no reason to gag yourself with a box of chocolates. Here are some reminders Cosmo offers of why being unattached totally rocks. Check it out - 18 Reasons to Love Being Single. My favourite is number 14:

"With more time to work out and less temptation to chow down on guy-friendly junk food, you're more likely to squeeze into the skinniest of skinny jeans."

Excellent Chinese Seafood Restaurant, Sydney

Excellent Chinese Seafood on Urbanspoon

Carlingford Court, 101 Carlingford Rd, Epping Sydney

One of the better and more popular Chinese restaurants in Sydney's North West. Located in Carlingford Court Shopping Centre, Sydney - this restaurant has been around for years. Popular for its yum cha and Cantonese dishes, this is go-to place for many families wanting to celebrate an occasion or just have dinner out with home-style dishes :)

Famous for its crab vermicelli hotpot dish, many flock here, just for this dish - keen also for relatives from overseas to try this dish, which many say no one other place has such a unique crab and vermicelli dish. Crab is juicy, super tender.

One crab should be sufficient for 4 people, suggest 2 crabs for more people. The vermicelli is simply delicious, melts in your mouth and compliments the crab nicely. Be warned, the crab can be pricey - set aside approximately $100 for 1 crab dish.

The consistency of the food can be a hit and miss but the crab always seems to be so good! Apologies, but I was too excited to eat this dish, that I forgot to take a photo.

However here are some other dishes:

Salt & Pepper King Prawns

Chicken

Tofu hotpot with prawns, bbq pork, vegetables

Dessert of red bean soup and cut fruit (oranges) is included in the price of the meal. The restaurant is situated on 2 levels, most diners sit on the upper level, only accessible via a steep staircase.

Enjoyable meal, however can be pricey - will be back here for the crab :)
